What it's like to live here
This is the coast you picture when you think of a Thai beach town — except here there are two of them. Central Hua Hin grew up around the royal summer palace and its pretty railway station; Cha-Am, half an hour north, is the more laid-back seaside town where Thai families spread mats along the sand on weekends. Between and around them runs a near-continuous strip of beach, promenade and low-rise condominiums.
It is the practical choice for daily life without a car. Markets, clinics, the night market, cafés and restaurants are all within walking distance, and both towns line up along the same coastal road, so moving between them is easy. This is also where most of the condos and beachfront apartments are — which makes it the simplest place to buy a lock-up-and-leave holiday home or something to rent out.
It is the busiest of our three areas. If you want silence and a big garden, look to the quiet coast or the hills. If you want to step out of the door into shops, people and the sea — this whole strip, Cha-Am included, is it.
